I love books that help you understand previous eras or different cultures. I think books give us a way of understanding people that we may not encounter every day. I think books teach empathy and give students the ability to try and see how others feel through character development.
My summer reading list that is not based on children's books.:
My name is Sarah Sontag. This is my sixth year at Loker School. I started as the kindergarten reading specialist and am now the reading specialist for grades k-4. I love working here. Loker has a wonderful community filled with families, teachers and staff that go above and beyond to make Loker a great place to work and learn. It is a collaboration of all our efforts and the common goal of having happy, successful students that make Loker a very special place.
I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri with my B.A. in Elementary Education and African American Studies. I started my career teaching in the St. Louis Public Schools as a fourth grade teacher and taught as a first grade teacher there as well. I lived briefly in Seattle and then headed to Philadelphia so that my husband could attend law school. I worked for the School District of Philadelphia for 4 years. Three of those years were spent as a first grade teacher and one year as a literacy coach. While in Philadelphia I received my Masters in Reading from St. Joseph's University. I had a seven year break from my career to stay home with my lovely girls, Hannah and Madeline.
RThey are now in 7th and 8th grade in the Arlington Public School System. Maddy is a gymnast who dabbles in hip hip, while Hannah plays field hockey, lacrosse and soccer. (Hannah left, Maddy-right)
Eight years ago we moved to Arlington, Massachusetts to be closer to my sister who lives down the street. I have a niece and nephew who I get to see often.
Here they are!
Reuben is a baseball player, skier and surfer. My niece Piper is a singer, pianist and synchronized swimmer.
From the slideshow you can tell I am from just outside of Syracuse. I am not a huge sports watcher (I prefer to play), but I love the Syracuse Orange!
